White Jewelers was established in 1928 by my grandfather Orelin M. White and my grandmother Nellie White. We are celebrating our 88th year, in our family-owned business. I am a third generation jeweler. My grandfather went to watch makers school to learn watch and clock repair. He started his business in Jeromesville, Ohio. Then White Jewelers moved to Woosterin a building next to Freedlander's Department Store in the early 1930's.
My grandfather repaired watches and clocks and slowly bought jewelry for his store. In 1944 White Jewelers moved to 215 E. Liberty St. in a small building of 500 square feet.
In 1970 my grandfather asked his daughter Chell Maxwell to return to Wooster to help operate the jewelry store. My mother in the late 70's bought the property which contained White Jewelers, the shoe repair shop that later became the stork shop and the Wooster Theater.
In 1989 I moved back to Wooster upon my mother's request to help with the operation of the jewelry store. In 1992 I purchased the business from my mother.
In October of 1999 we tore down the Wooster Theater and the little shop next to it and built a new jewelry store right next door to our old store at 211 East Liberty Street with approximately 2300 square feet.
Wishing to create a quaint, cozy, and welcoming structure, a charming Amish-inspired Victorian facades was created. It features wooden gingerbread, a small porch, and double glass doors that are hand etched with a flower border. A cupola with an Amish buggy weathervane tops off the design.
The building was built by Ivan Weaver of Fredricksburg, and inspired by the Carlisle Gift Shop in Walnut Creek, Ohio. The jewelry store interior houses a large chandelier, which originally came from the Lyric Twin Cinema on South Market Street.
In 2005 I met Andy Kobilarcsik. He was a retiree from the State of Ohio and his job title was an Auditor Supervisor. We got married in September 2006. He joined me in the business as my Inventory Management Specialist, taking care of all my inventory. He has since become more involved in the daily operations and has become an integral part of our business.
